Make the most of the last day downhill and enjoy the fresh air and atmosphere of Haut-Vénéon.

A strange aroma tickles the nostrils of hikers on the left bank of the Haut-Vénéon: the heady, tell-tale perfume of rhododendron ferrugineum, beautiful plants with pink flowers that you pass through on your way back down from the heights towards civilisation. There is a clear view and the path is easy. With no need to hurry, under the benevolent eye of Les Ailefroides and the Barre des Ecrins, it as if you were now part of the landscape.

Description

From the refuge, go back down the path you came up. Just before arriving at the footbridge over the Vénéon, take the left bank path overlooking the stream. Great views over the valley and a few very stony sections. Above Plan du Carrelet (the refuge is below, opposite) continue round the mountain towards the Chardon valley (signposted).
Go on into the valley as far as the footbridge and cross the Chardon stream, following the cairns to go over to the left bank.
The path is almost flat and returns towards the Vénéon valley, which it looks down on from the left bank. After a few tricky sections near Combe de Verney, the path drops 50 m and crosses the stream (dry in summer), and then rises 50 m on the other side. Follow the cairns, then the path becomes easier all the way to La Bérarde. Cross the bridge (signpost) and go on to the car park.
