5. From Le Désert-en-Valjouffrey to La Chapelle-en-Valjouffrey

Description
- The path crosses meadows interspersed with forest copses and low walls and becomes a footpath. It rises slightly through woods and scree.
- At the “Bois Noir - 1100 m” crossroads, cross the footbridge and continue towards Les Faures. The path descends gently, sometimes closely skirting the Bonne River on the left bank.
- At the “Les Fauchiers - 1070 m” crossroads, turn right. Once on the RD117, follow the road to the right to cross the bridge, then take the path on the left towards “la Chalp par canal de la Douy”. Then reach the crossroads “Le Pinet - 1150m”. Follow the path (old Douy irrigation canal) to La Chalp (narrow passages, a few short steep ascents and descents, a short stony ford).
- At La Chalp, take the first left onto the RD117. Follow this to the right as far as the Ségouins bridge (500 m). Stay on the road, passing the sawmill, then take a small path along the road to the bend.
- Descend on the path beneath the Bariou rock. Take the footbridge over La Bonne River. Follow the signs up to an old road. This road goes off to the right as far as the “Les Chatelards” crossroads.
- Take the track on the right towards “Pont des Praz”, cross it and continue to La Chapelle-en-Valjouffrey.
- Departure : Le Désert-en-Valjouffrey
- Arrival : La Chapelle-en-Valjouffrey

No sand or barren lands, the name of Desert comes from the word "essarter" which means to clear the land of forest in order to produce a clearing. Forest clearing was necessary for the implementation and the development of agriculture in the mountains... Nowadays, the Desert is one of the only hamlets at altitude which is inhabited all year round in spite of the harsh mountain climate.
